From Interns To Executive Producers: The Top 3 Secrets To Making It In TV

Hey aspiring TV producers!

We've been in your shoes - starting out as interns with big dreams of making it in the television industry. And through hard work, determination, and a few strategic moves, we climbed our way to become Executive Producers.

Now we're here to share our top 3 Secrets to Success with you.

1. The Art of The Job Hunt

We want to be honest with you. If you’re only applying to online job listings, you’re missing out on huge opportunities.

How do we know? When we were starting out, there were very few job listings that we knew of. And we didn’t have the internet or even cell phones… (yes, we’re old).

We had to take matters into our own hands — and that’s what turned us into job hunting experts.

We got the Hollywood Reporter and Variety (the industry trades) as often as we could afford to… and cold-called production companies to ask about job opportunities. By being proactive and relentless in our pursuit, we were able to uncover hidden job openings and land gigs that weren't advertised at all.

How did we know what to say? We didn’t. We just tried our best and fine tuned our approach along the way. We learned a ton about what works and what doesn’t.

Sounds a little obvious, right? And you may think everyone is doing this. But we’re here to tell you that they’re not! So you should be doing it.

If you want to know more about how to do this easily and with confidence…
we can tell you more about that here!

2. Make Your Resume Stand Out

In a sea of generic resumes, yours needs to grab attention and make a statement at first glance.

Instead of sticking to the standard corporate format, we learned to be creative and tailored our resumes to the entertainment industry.

With strategic fomatting and smart, punchy writing, we made our resumes stand out in the crowd and give a great impression to hiring managers.

3. Live Cheap, Work Hard

This may not be the most popular advice to give… but it’s important. We started out with no money and nobody paying the bills but ourselves.

Ah, the glamorous life of an intern. Long hours, low pay, and a never-ending to-do list of menial tasks.

But here's the thing – we embraced all the grunt work assignments with gusto. Whether it was fetching coffee, organizing files, or running errands, we tackled each task with enthusiasm, professionalism and detail.

We figured out early that no job was too small and that every opportunity was a chance to prove ourselves. By living cheap, working hard, and taking even the most mundane tasks seriously, we earned the respect of our colleagues and paved the way for bigger opportunities down the line.

Let us explain why “live cheap” is important.

You don’t want to pass up a great job opportunity because it doesn’t pay a lot.

Sometimes the connections you make and the lessons you learn are just as valuable. They were for us.

Money will come - titles too. But when you’re starting out, be sure to put the emphasis on experience.

By keeping your expenses low, you have more options open to you.

So there you have it – our top three secrets to making it in TV as interns and beyond.

Remember, success in this industry isn't just about talent or luck; it's about hustle, perseverance, and a willingness to go above and beyond.

So go ahead, chase those opportunities, stand out from the crowd, and embrace the grind. You've got this!
